Word just dropped here about Pixar's much rumored follow-up to their 2001 film, Monsters Inc. Turns out, however, that the Film Formally Known As Monster Inc. 2 will henceforth be called Monster University and follow the comic exploits of Mike and Sulley as they build their friendship.
Of course, what with all origin stories about best of friends, Mike and Sulley weren't always the best of friends. Says Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive VP of worldwide distribution, "From the moment they met at university, they could not stand each other. This story takes you through the ups and downs, and how they overcame their own differences."
Excuse me, kitty, am I NOT going to be in the prequel? I don't think so. |
Sounds promising enough. Pixar doesn't tend to disappoint in any department, from the richness of their storytelling to the crème de la crème of their voice acting. Even in a slate of masterful cinema in 2010, Toy Story 3 stood above others for me as my personal favorite of the year, a feat no other Pixar film (or animated film) has done since the original back in 1996. Basically, there shouldn't be anything to worry about, right? Pixar doesn't have but two minor hiccups on their otherwise stellar track sheet, and Monsters Inc. is easily one of their most creative premises this side of talking toys. Pending a director (can I hear a rally cry for the original's helmer and Up Oscar champ Pete Docter), this looks to be another Pixar success story waiting to happen, though still and exciting new front for them. The question that will be on everyone's mind: "can they pull of a prequel?"
Though, from a more critical standpoint, how many more stories examining friendship does Pixar need on its shelf?

Monster friends, bug friends, car friends, toy friends...they can keep it coming as far as I'm concerned :-)
